1st Saturday of the month: Sidetraked

Sidetraked is a newly expanded night at Brixton‘s Hive venue combining the soulful strains of deep, melodic drum and bass with the same eclectic array of beats and breaks from a whole host of jazzy and downbeat genres the night was founded on. Brought to you by production duo and learned DJs in their own right, Theo Ackroyd and Alex Sartori A.K.A Systematics, the night brings together some of the key d&b dubplate specialists and esteemed vinyl crate diggers united in their desire to provide a hearty alternative to the commerciality and cheesiness on offer elsewhere in clubland.

For the past few months it’s had the same tight team of residents building on its success, with Chris Intaface, the Future Thinkin crew and Sartori playing d&b upstairs, while Theo Ackroyd, Jazz John and Stuart Wade downstairs provide a nimble, playful array of dusty vinyl gems, from acid jazz and hip-hop antiquities to chunky broken beat or samba beats.
Starting out life as a live music jazz/funk jam in Guildford and expanding before relocating it in London, Sidetraked welcomed Alex Sartori to its fold after he returned from a year long stint in Bristol, where he had staged the first Movement night in the city and manned the decks at big nights such as Random Concept at Bristol Academy. Shortly after teaming up with Theo Ackroyd, they were making d&b together in the studio. It seemed only logical that Alex should use his expertise in d&b, stretching back to his long running stint at weekly Tempo at the Dogstar in 2002, to curate a d&b room at Sidetraked.

Having soundtracked a few sweaty summer evening’s festivities during 2011 they took up the offer to continue as a monthly, on every first Saturday of the month and New Years’ Eve 2011/12.

THE RESIDENTS

UPSTAIRS: Soulful Drum & Bass

FUTURE THINKINCREW
As well as being responsible for a succession of exclusive 12”s by Skitty, Survival, Sabre and Technical Itch via their label of the same name, the Future Thinkin crew have joined the Sidetraked line up as residents on a monthly basis, DJs Danny Exile and DM Cut representing at the decks, bringing you their latest dubplates and digital exclusives, while MC Shylo, Lady Mc and I-One whip up the assembled with some nimble mic skills. Just hear their long running Monday night show between 7pm and 9pm on KoolFM 94.5 and www.koollondon.com for further proof of their all round brilliance.

CHRIS INTAFACE
The list of nights and clubs around the world that Chris has played the infamous Movement, Hospitality, Intrigue in Bristol, Marky and Friends, Fabric, Herbal, The Bass in Brazil, and many other hot nights including his residency at the equally legendary Swerve. His radio shows, meanwhile, first for Kiss 100, then Ministry of Sound and Kool FM, are so sought up after that he recently discovered old editions selling on dodgy Russian websites selling for $19.99 a pop! You can currently hear him on KoolFM 94.5 / www.koollondon.com every Monday from 9pm-11pm..

SARTORI
Resident and programmer of the upstairs d&b room. Sartori is best known for being the promoter and DJ who brought the legendary Movement night to Bristol, but cut his teeth on the Brixton scene such as Tempo at Dogstar and Telegraph, One Nation at Brixton Academy, Night Vision at Jamm, and others. Finally finding himself on the same bills as his old skool heroes like Fabio, Nicky Blackmarket and Bryan Gee after years putting in the graft, his more recent sets have concentrated more and more on the sound he’s found in the studio as one half of Ackroyd & Sartori, slipping in handfuls of tunes from elsewhere in the more relaxed, party-friendly end of the drums spectrum.

DOWNSTAIRS: Jazz Lounge

THEO ACKROYD
Theo Ackroyd DJ, promoter and producer for over a decade, but always a music collector at heart – he‘s even been known to disappear to Brazil to try to satisfy his insatiable thirst for elusive vinyl. His sets are a crate digger’s delight, taking you from a rare jazz find to the exhilaration of Brazilian bossa, to the throb of Afrobeat and right back to home-grown broken dance-floor fillers and leftfield dubstep experiments. After experience on pirate radio and on the live jazz/funk scene in Guildford, not to mention high profile slots at the Camden Jazz Café, and increasingly compulsive vinyl buying, he teamed up with fellow crate digging enthusiast DJ Jazz Jon and relocated Sidetraked in London in 2009. “For me, it’s all about timing and bringing audiences into the process,” he says, “One minute we can be getting down to Roy Ayers and the next, Pharoah Sanders, followed by Burial or Four Tet’’ Theo loves looking back whilst keeping his feet firmly in the day, and leaving no gem left unheard!

DJ JAZZ JON
Soul/funk/jazz and broken beat specialist Jon started his DJ career in Guildford, Surrey at the start of the acid jazz boom and is famous for his original vinyl collection and has even been known to travel to the far corners of America to find the unknown. He was one third of the famous Melting Pot crew who played all around Surrey back in the 90′s, but breaking away he started his own night called Stomped & Wasted with northern soul icon Ian Clark then joined the Acid Jazz Magic Bus along side DJs Chris Brown and Mark Webster. Also playing guest spots everywhere from Crete to Chicago (at the famous “Funky Budda Lounge”), Camden Jazz Café and 100 Club in Oxford Street, he’s also done numerous radio shows with long time DJ buddy K.J.

STUART WADE
Stuart Wade is the creator, director, producer and main man of Down To The Bone, leading lights of the live jazz/funk/acid jazz scene who recently dropped their 10 track album ’The Main Ingredients‘, featuring a host of talented musicians formerly from pioneering jazz/funksters like Snowboy and his Latin Section, the Incognito live band, Joey Negro’s Sunburst Band and even The Specials. Having sold over 500,000 releases with the band, Stuart isn’t averse to spinning a few records himself either, having collected throughout his entire career and amassed a collection to be envied.

All set in the uniquely friendly and relaxed Hive Bar just off Brixton High Street towards the recreation centre, with its pulsating mod lounge upstairs, and brightly lit chill out space, not to mention a smoker-friendly outdoor street garden giving it a café feel, admission is FREE and the bar also serves a mean array of food. If you’re tired of queuing in superclubs like cattle and moody punters but don‘t want to miss out on your cutting edge sounds, Sidetraked at The Hive is the alternative you‘ve been looking for!

Second Friday of the month:

Pest

Chandler and Marriott grew up together in Matlock, Derbyshire, England. Chandler studied music in Liverpool, and Marriott in London. It was there that Marriott met the others and the band began.
After releasing their first music on white labels, they were signed to Ninja Tune and have released two albums so far. The band is currently working on their third studio album, rumored to be released in late 2010.

In 2009, Matt Chandler released a jazz album, entitled After Midnight. The album is sometimes listed under the collective name Matt Chandler Trio, and features Karl Bingham of Pinski Zoo and Ian Beestin.
